Visualizing Data

I think one of the best ways to help students develop the ability to visually represent information and data is by teaching your students about all the different tools that are available to do this. Showing students the youtube video on storytelling with infographics will show them how important visual learning is to people and how much more information is absorbed by the brain by seeing it as opposed to hearing it.  Another way would be to create an infographic as a class showing the students how you can easily represent things differently with some of the infographic websites..  I did a Science experiment with my students a few years ago on if people remember things better by seeing them versus hearing them.  I could do this experiment again with my class and then the students could work in a group and use an infographic such as Picktochart to present the results. I think that by having students create their own infographic will help them develop the ability to visually represent information and data tremendously.

  1. Eric,

I like your idea of using infographic in Science class. Science experiments offer a wealth of data that could be represented in an infographic. Infographics require students to think about the data and represent it in ways that easily communicate the meaning behind the data. Traditional lab reports don't always do that.

  2. I love your idea of using an infographic in Science. I usually use just a google slide to have the information presented and then they display them in a graph. However, I think if I had them present their results in an infographic it would help them get a better understanding of their results. You have a great idea!

  3. I really want to do an infograph with my class I am just really concerned about how to implement the assignment without eating up a lot of instructional time. I think it could be a really engaging activity and may assign one at the beginning of the unit with so that students have enough time to play with it on their own. I have already started a competition for students to create infographs for each unit. I even plan on purchasing some of the really good ones and put them up on the wall permanently. I haven't had a chance to watch that video yet but I'll definitely check it out. Thank you for the recommendation

  4. "Storytelling with Infographics" is a great Youtube video to show students how powerful visual communication is. I learned a lot of information from this video such as how visual aids in school improve learning by 400% and that 90% of information absorbed by the brain is visual.
